Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Before and after

One of the earliest signs of aging in both men and women is the appearance of fullness or heaviness in the upper eyelids. The extra volume causes hooding or folding of skin that result in a tired, cross or run-down expression. Women often comment to Dr. Robertson that makeup becomes difficult to apply, and the eyes lose their bright expressive message. An upper eyelid blepharoplasty is an ideal simple procedure that removes the excess skin, muscle and fat above the eye to restore a clean, youthful expression. The upper eyelid incision is placed in a pre-existing crease and the redundant excess skin and muscle is precisely addressed, leaving an imperceptible closure hidden in the natural facial contours. Fat removal is also judiciously performed in select patients, but is much less common than in previous years. Experience found that aggressive fat removal often left a gaunt or sunken look to eyes after years of follow up. Newer techniques respect the volume and its contribution to youthful, defined full eyelids.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is one of the most rewarding procedures for both the patient and Dr. Robertson. The surgery can be done under local anesthesia alone or with oral sedation, making this one of the most simple and yet powerful cosmetic surgeries available. An upper eyelid lift can also be performed with IV sedation when combined with more comprehensive facial procedures such as a facelift. In either case, the result of this affordable procedure is the bright expressive natural eye shape of youth with less than a week of recovery and undetectable incisions.
